On Coffee

I'm teaching my four year-old son how to write. Every night for the past week, we pick a topic, he dictates and I type. Since he can't yet write or type himself, I'll focus on story telling and getting him used to the idea that he can archive the thoughts in his head. He's jazzed about it, and it's my favorite part of the day. Check out his first story:

If kids drink too much coffee, they are going to get sick. But I like to drink coffee because of the sugar.

You use the coffee machine, then you need to put some milk in it. And sugar in it, and cream in it. Then you should drink it. And it tastes like a little sugar. And when I drink it, I might taste the sugar, and the milk, and the cream and the coffee.

I drink the coffee at the table.

Hmmm… maybe he’ll be following in your footsteps as a writer. That’s a great story! : )

I love the writing workshops with your son. I may have to take a page out of your play book and work on that with my kiddos.

BTW, I take my coffee the same as your son. Coffee, cream and SUGAR.

I love this idea you started with your son! It’s amazing how a child’s perception is compared to grown-ups like us, isn’t it? The coffee topic got my attention and it sounds like he likes his coffee the same I like mine — sweet and creamy. :-)

Oh, he’s adorable!!! Good for you Nichole, it’s such a great idea. I attribute my little one’s love of reading and writing to a similar exercise she used to do with my parents when they took care of her.

BTW…my little brother would beg as a child, “Please make me that coffee that tastes like See’s candy again!” :)
