It's Not All Croissants and Coffee

"Razors only" in the bathroom (meaning no blow dryers) is just one of the not-so-wonderful things about living in Paris. Find out what else wracks our nerves over at Glamour. Thanks Joanna!

5 things?!!! only 5!!! haha..

2. cantal (young, not too aged) tastes more like cheddar than mimolette…and also bon marche grand epicerie and monoprix have cheddar, i know after years of searching and importing huge logs of my own!

3. don’t even get me started about the showers…

4. familiar scenario except for me it was in the hallway…no mirror

5. just wait until you get lectures from the pharmacist about other such intimate matters ;)))

6. anyway enjoy!! living in paris for 5 years was the most frustrating…. i mean….the best time of my life, but really, do enjoy!! thanks for the all-too familiar laughs! x chantal

I enjoyed your article and got such a chuckle about the public diarrhea announcement, lol!
Another funny thing about Paris is the lack of ice…I’ll never forget the women in our hotel who just couldn’t understand why she couldn’t find the ice machine and the poor desk clerk who was making ice for her in his mini ice cube tray in his mini fridge! I totally agree with you about how nice the French people are!

We found the cheddar at Monoprix (we had to dig)! We were so happy, and our boys could finally eat something familiar (they have limited likes).

I read the article on Glamour and felt obligated to tell you, as a fellow American in Paris, that I saw what I believed to be cheddar cheese in the Monoprix on rue Caumartin in the 9th (just behind Printemps). It was in the aisle fridge, not behind the counter. If the Mimolette strategy goes wrong, you could check there? bonne chance et bisous!

nichole, i agree with every single thing on your list! especially the hairdrying in the kitchen thing. and the fear of sounding like borat!
chantal is right though, the do have cheddar at bon marché, and while its not as cheap as the ubiquitous emmental, its not sooo expensive.
nice to know the problems of expats are universal!

Chantal – we’ve since found some EXPENSIVE cheddar, and have also used Cantal. But wow, did we have to search hard. ;)

Hi, Nichole! You are really funny! I read you on Joanna’s blog. I do the Single-ish blog on Glamour. I sent your blog to my Canadian friend who teaches French in Delaware…

Loved the article! So interesting to know about the not so fun things of living in Paris…I am still so envious though! Enjoy your time there!

That made me really laugh and cry for you. I could probably put up with everything on your list but no hot showers – wow! I’ve actually been there (South America) and let me just say that I completely feel your pain.
