So, I've been on the lookout for a French butter source in the US.
While it's fairly easy to find Beurre D'Isigny, it's not as easy to find other brands, especially at reasonable prices.
While I enjoy the rush of successfully smuggling a few pounds of salted heaven back into the US every few weeks, I would love to find a reputable source with a wider selection.
An email from a reader yesterday expedited my search, and guess what? I think I may have found something.
The Gourmet Food Store has a nice selection of French butters, including Echire butters. Echire butters are revered, government protected butters that hail from the Echire region of Western France. Some are outrageously expensive (uh, hello $141 an ounce), but most are within reason for an imported product.
The butter I sneak in the suitcase is not Echire butter (in fact it's garden variety grocery store butter as seen above), but it's fantastic. Makes me wish our culture looked at good butter as a birth right, which is how I imagine the French feel.
