Paris in the Rain

Paris in the Rain

Unseasonably cool weather and a week's worth of rain are the talk of my Paris twitter friends this morning. In short, they are not happy. I refrained from sharing my contrarian view, or that I would love to pull on a coat, open an umbrella and maybe even wrap a scarf around my neck.

As much as I want to enjoy August and all of the stone fruit, fresh corn and beach weather it brings, I am a cool/cold weather girl. I power through summer in clothes I don't like, curse the heat and humidity, and patiently wait for fall, winter and spring.

I also like the rain. I'm not sure why. The closest I get to figuring it out is recalling my obsession with inclement weather when I was a child. I read weather books, watched the weather channel, tracked hurricanes and stayed up all night to watch snow storms. I had a ritual that drove my mom mad that included lighting inappropriate amounts of candles (I still light candles whenever it rains). I cozied up with a book and enjoyed the warm candle glow and trickles of rain down the window. This ritual always followed a sometimes lengthy turn around the neighborhood with my rain jacket and umbrella.

A few days ago, Shannon of Je Ne Se Quoi asked me to talk about what I recommend doing in Paris in the rain. I just re-read it, and I'm feeling pretty predictable right now.

You can read my response and those of a few other Paris bloggers here.

I am also a cool/cold weather girl, and try not to whine my way through summer. I can't wait to put on a a scarf & coat!

My mother grew up in Ireland and hates the rain, so she's brainwashed us into thinking we hate it, too. I really need to re-evaluate… You've inspired me to try some rainy day photography.

I completely agree. I am a wilting lily in any sort of heat. I love rain, and scarves and boots and bundling up and drinking tea. Summers are pretty grey and chilly in San Francisco so I don't suffer much. It's been drizzly and in the 50's all week. Everyone complains just as they do this every year as if it's the first time this has ever happened. But I love it. We get indian summer and there will be a few too many hot days for my taste next month. It's nice to get my fill of chill now.

That second photo is really beautiful.

Nichole – thanks for the link to the blog. Your photos blow my hair back so hard I could go bald. I hear them. I want to print them out & put them on my walls when French people annoy me to the point of wanting to pack a bag to get back to the good ole american everything.

Thanks for the lend :)
