Cheese: Week Seven
What's better than Friday night cheese night? Cheese + Jenna and Mark + surprise treats + a sleepover. A cheeseover of sorts. Some of you may already know Jenna and Mark as the duo behind Whimsy and Spice, so I don't think I need to point out why we were excited for Mark's cheese picks and treats. Though it took them hours to make their way through rush hour traffic in Soho and out to the burbs, once the cheese was on the table it was all uphill. True to form, Mark didn't disappoint. He brought: Roomano- An aged Dutch cheese that's similar to Gouda Monte Enebro - A creamy goat cheese with three distinct layers Bayley Hazen Blue - A mild Stilton-esque blue cheese In addition to the cheese, Mark brought a pack of Evan's favorite Hazelnut Chocolate Whiskey Sandwiches, some homemade ice cream and a box of something he "just threw together" but was more like "chocolately, caramely, salty bliss." All three cheeses were incredible. The Gouda was sharp, crumbly and had a bit of a crunch (not unlike the crunch of salt in the French butter I adore). The blue was really mild, and if I'm ever in the position to recommend a blue cheese to a person who doesn't like blue cheese, Bayley Hazen it is. And the goat? All three layers were perfect. While we had cheese and dinner, Jenna and Mark's daughters kicked back on the couch with our two boys. It was cute, guys. Very cute. Once we enjoyed Mark's desserts and the kids were asleep, we retreated to the couch. One-by-one, the husbands sauntered up to bed, but Jenna and I kept talking. And talking. And talking. At 4:30 we finally peeled ourselves off the couch and went to sleep. I can't remember the last time I was up that late, or the last time I didn't worry about getting to bed at a responsible hour. We were aware that we'd pay the price the next morning, but it was nothing that coffee and croissants wouldn't fix. Read Jenna's account of the evening here.
