Cheese: Week Ten

Our oldest son, Alexander, wanted to be in charge of this week's cheese night. So on Friday afternoon, we took him to Whole Foods to pick out two cheeses. Armed with his new knowledge of Brie, and bolstered by a growing affinity for goat cheese, he chose: Fromager d'Aaffinois Double Cream Brie Capricho de Cabra Goat Cheese We're almost certain he chose the double cream brie based on the fact that it was oozing out of the rind. We had a brie a few weeks ago, and he laughed when it was described as oozing. What can I say? He's six. The goat cheese was selected because of the cool packaging. What can I say? He's my son. Despite the sort of comical selection process, the choices ended up being perfect for the occasion: mild and kid-friendly. Both kids seemed to sense the adult nature of the event and beamed with pride. We poured some apple juice into wine glasses and toasted to their first grown-up party.

Looks delicious, but apple juice? Pour him a little wine next time half-diluted with water. It's probably healthier for him than apple juice, and it would go better with the cheese.

Do you go to the smaller Whole Foods in Ridgewood, or the nice, big new one in Paramus?

I would like to marry d'affinois. Or be buried in it. Or, just slather it all over my face on a daily basis. Dreamiest cream-dream of any cheese out there. Your boy did good!

Everything about this makes it the coolest thing I've heard in a long time ;)

Oh, we go to the Whole Foods in Montclair. It's the closest.

Dave –

We've tried wine and neither son likes it.

We just bought apple juice as a treat, so don't worry – they're not hopped up on sugar all day. ;)

Love this! And can't wait for the day when my sons are interested in trying new types of cheese. Although my oldest does have a strange obsession with aged gouda. It's the only one he regularly requests.

It's sort of funny…our last two trips to WF, Amelia has wanted to pick out the cheese as well. She did pretty good the last time I let her.

I can see their future. ;)

we love picking out cheeses to try at the grocery store, brie has been my favorite lately and I always put some freshly ground pepper on it :)
