A shiny new home for my favorite kitchen concoction/beauty treatment: salt and olive oil. I've used garden variety table salt and olive oil as a body scrub for at least 8 years, but it wasn't until last week that I got sick of whipping it up in a mixing bowl on demand. One $5.99 jar + 2 cups of salt + 1/2 cup olive oil = instant shower gratification. I've written for beauty brands since 2003, and have smeared and sniffed my way through hundreds of products. But nothing beats this bang-for-buck scrub. Your skin glows. For real. Just be sure to rinse the slippery residue out of the tub, or expect retaliation from your significant other.

Simply Mel –

Yes! I've used Lavender essential oil and it's great. You can add anything, really.

it is the simple pleasure in life that really make our day even better, non?

wondering what this grand concoction would be like with some dried lavender added to it?

I'll definitely have to try this! I've always stuck to the old brown sugar routine, so it's probably time to switch it up :) Thanks for sharing!

Oh—and big congrats on the Chronicle book!! I've recently applied to work there (hello, dream job!) and I legitimately had to suppress a squeal when I read your post yesterday. Congrats! :)

I love this idea. I've recently started using a little scrubby pad on my face and have really noticed a difference. I bet this would just do wonders! Thanks for the recipe.

Christine – Exactly. My mixing bowls hardly make it feel like a "treatment"

Wow, that's so brilliant and simple—might have to whip up one of these myself! Cheers for sharing—and isn't it funny how much prettier things are just in a jar?!
