Hand Painted 17th Century Map

Map, Francois Ollive, Marseille, 1658 This portulan (a type of nautical chart used from the 13th to 16th), by Francois Ollive is hand painted on parchment. Though it's four centuries old, it's still detailed, saturated and vivid. It was among many other maps and charts of a similar nature on display at the Musée des Lettres et Manuscrits. Very tough to photograph the colors - they were beautiful.

The more incredible that the colors are still vivid after all these years. Fantastic find!
