CELESTIAL NOTEBOOK SET
"Do I dare disturb the universe?" - T.S. Eliot
A man is trapped in a universe as vast as his desires and as constrained as the expectations that block them. As time runs out, he struggles with an overwhelming question.
"Trade your cleverness for wonder." - Rumi
As literature lovers, we’re the first to champion words that exquisitely describe the nature of things. But sometimes descriptions get in the way of nature and the direct experience of it. In this illustration, a pen transcribing mathematical descriptions of the cosmos, transforms into a telescope observing a starlit sky.
"Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard are sweeter." - John Keats
Keats pushes all the right buttons for us. The tension between imagination and reality, the perfect and the flawed, the eternal and the transient. In this illustration, a constellation revolves like a record, and the groove spirals toward a waning moon.
"Beauty will save the world." - Fyodor Dostoevsky
Out of context, it would be easy to dismiss this quotation as hopelessly naive. But for Dostoevsky, "beauty" is what inspires the best in us, our aspirations for what is good and true, what connects us to each other. In this illustration, we wanted to capture a sense of individuals connecting to a whole that is greater than the parts. Points of light suggest a globe at sunrise, then connect through sunrise into the shape of a magnolia flower.
