Poe was a master of the unreliable narrator, a madman who works hard to persuade us that their horrific actions were reasonable. The Tell-Tale Heart is a great example of this, but we also love the tightly written short story The Black Cat for its delicious use of this convention.

In our illustration, we include three elements presented in the story - a noose, an axe and the cat - to create an image of the imagined demon in feline form that provokes the narrator to madness and murder.
